So, the most recent thing Bug and I made was a pinata for our gender reveal party this weekend. I considered making a question mark, but decided it was a little more complex than I wanted to take on. After hours of searching through ideas on pinterest I decided on a crescent moon shape. I did not take pictures throughout the process as I was not planning on this blog. But from now on, I'll try to be more considerate.
First I found a box that normal people use to put clothing/odd gifts in to make wrapping easier. Forget that! I decided to cut it apart. I cut the edges off (but save those, you'll want them later) leaving just the large flat pieces. I then drew out the shape I wanted. After I cut out my moon shape, I then traced it onto the other large flat piece to make sure I got them exactly the same. (If you want the star, cut one out of any extra cardboard you have)
After I had my two moon shapes, I took the edge pieces I cut off and (using lots of little pieces of frog tape) attached them (upright) along the edge of one moons. I left a decent sized gap at the top though so I would have a place to fill the pinata. Then tape the other moon shape into place.
Next, Bug and I paper mached around the frame that I just built. I mean, I guess you could skip this step... but where's the fun in that??? Making a mess is where it's at. We tore up newspaper and dipped it in a mixture I made. You could use half Elmer's glue, half water... but I didn't have any glue on hand. So I took to the internet and found something else to try. My mixture was one part flour, five parts water, boil it on the stove for about 3 minutes. I strongly encourage you to let it cool before trying to dip the newspaper in it. I think that part is pretty obvious, but you never know. REMEMBER TO LEAVE YOUR OPENING TO FILL IT LATER. Let it dry. Mine sat for several days before I got the candy to fill it. (I also paper mached the star, but again... you probably don't HAVE to do that, I'm just crazy)
I poked a whole (using scissors) in the under side of the moon to attach the star. I took twine and fed it through the hole I made then tied a large knot (leaving a good sized tail to attach the star to) so it wouldn't go back through the hole. I then looped a large section of it to make the handle to hang it from.
Next we filled our pinata. Bug and I dumped glitter, confetti, and wrapped candies into the opening in our pinata. After it was filled, I took white streamer and wrapped it around the pinata (covering everything except the strings). I thought this was going to be the easy part, I was wrong. Wrapping it tightly around the crescent moon shape without it sticking up and looking weird was a little bit of a challenge, but it was doable. I used one whole roll of streamer and part of another roll. I wrapped it in sections to make it easier. I covered each section about 3 times (down, up, and back down again before beginning the next section).
Will post pictures after the party of Bug busting it open.
